When I was a child, I used to spend hours with my dad listening to his old records, and sometimes he would teach me to play his old guitar.

"Look, honey, it's not that hard."

"Yes, but you're playing for me, Dad."

"One day, honey, you'll be a famous musician, something I could never achieve..."

"Ohhh, Dad."

"What's wrong?"

I felt a sharp pain in my ear, and Dad rushed me to the doctor, but from that day on, I lost my hearing. I could no longer hear the sound of music.

After a while, my parents made sure I attended the best school to learn sign language and lip reading.

"Maria, we're so proud of you for staying strong. Not many people have your strength."

"Yes, you're a very brave girl. You inspire me."

I realized there were many people like me who also had a hearing impairment and lived normal lives, but my sister Jasmine, who was two years older than me, started behaving differently.

"Maybe I should find another home, since in this house everything revolves around Maria."

Once, when I was in seventh grade, I participated in a talent show that all the parents at my school attended, but Jasmine threw a huge tantrum because she had a tennis match that same day.

"Fine, I'll go to Maria's school and Dad will come to watch you, Jasmine."

"You never come to my matches, Mom."

" "Okay, then I'll go to your tennis match and Dad can go see Maria."

"That's the problem, they're both always worried about Maria."

And at that moment, Jasmine took my guitar for the talent show and broke it in half. I was so angry I lunged at her! But Dad pulled me away and said the most horrible thing anyone has ever said.
