Building Circular Future: Exploring Material Hubs - Workshop Introduction
As part of the CCRI Knowledge Hub project, the ICONS team held a workshop exploring the concept of circular economy hubs, with a particular focus on Material Hubs.
While there is no universally agreed-upon definition, Material Hubs typically serve several key functions: collecting and sorting unwanted materials, facilitating their redistribution or recycling, supporting the design of products for easy disassembly, and fostering collaboration among diverse stakeholders.
Following the initial session, recorded in this video, participants were divided into discussion groups.
Key takeaways from these sessions centred around the drivers, barriers, and lessons learned regarding the development of material hubs.
The group discussions shed light on factors that promote the growth of material hubs, among which political drivers (EU regulations, national laws, and local waste management policies) and human factors (public awareness and knowledge about material reuse) play a crucial role.
Regarding challenges hindering the development of material hubs, the participants highlighted that regulations can also be a barrier, especially when they are complex or inconsistent.
Additionally, uncertainty around long-term socio-economic benefits and concerns about profitability and return on investment were identified as further obstacles.
Drawing on lessons learned and past experiences, the emphasis was put on stakeholder and community engagement. A strong local driving force is essential, along with the involvement of all actors across the value chain.
