An infinitive is a verb that is not bound by time. An infinitive is a base verb, or a verb in its basic form. This is called the bare infinitive. But when you think of the infinitive you probably think of the verb form called the full infinitive or the to-infinitive.

The to-infinitive is the verb in its base form plus the particle “to” (not to be confused with a preposition). The TO is often called the sign of the infinitive because it will signal the full infinitive.

The full or to- infinitive is a verbal. Like gerunds and participles, a verbal may take the properties of a noun, adjective, or adverb. An infinitive can function or take as a subject, direct object, subject complement, adjective, or adverb.

Examples are given and there is a bonus quiz at the end of the lesson.
