The Stanley Steemer Story: From One Man to a National Brand
In 1947, Jack A. Bates founded a modest carpet cleaning business in Columbus, Ohio, investing just over \$2,000. This humble beginning laid the foundation for what would become Stanley Steemer.
By the early 1970s, Jack's son, Wesley Bates, joined the company full-time. Together, they engineered their first steam-cleaning machine, dubbed "Stanley I," in 1972. This innovation led to the company's incorporation as Stanley Steemer International, Inc.
In 1976, Stanley Steemer introduced a groundbreaking truck-mounted, dual-wand cleaning system, revolutionizing the carpet cleaning industry. The 1980s marked significant growth. By 1984, the company boasted 215 franchises across 38 states. Wesley Bates became President and CEO in 1985, and under his leadership, Stanley Steemer expanded its services to include tile and grout cleaning, upholstery cleaning, and air duct cleaning.
In 2000, Stanley Steemer launched its first national television advertising campaign, becoming the first carpet cleaning company in America to do so.
Today, Stanley Steemer remains a family-owned business, now in its third generation, with over 280 corporate-owned and franchised locations across 49 states. The company continues to manufacture its own equipment in Dublin, Ohio, ensuring consistent quality and innovation in its services.
