Surviving a Snowstorm | Winter Hiking in the Altai Mountains | Part 2
Hello, friends! Our winter hike in the Altai Mountains with a dog continues, and in this part we'll have to survive a snowstorm that first trapped us for four days at a trout lake and then caught up with us at the mountain pass on the day we left.
We walked for several kilometers with poor visibility, sometimes no more than five meters, and powerful gusts of wind knocked Natasha off her feet several times. This snowstorm was the strongest we've ever experienced.
In this part, you'll follow our route from the second hut to the trout lake on the Bystraya River. We'll ski along a snowmobile trail through an unnamed mountain pass at 2,000 meters, offering views of the distant mountains of the Terekty Range and the valleys of the Koksa, Sarychmen, and Charychmen rivers. Along the way, we'll stop by another hut and, at sunset, arrive at the final destination of the route—a fishing lodge on the lake. At the base, we'll pitch a tent in a yurt and spend four days there. Taras will make several unsuccessful attempts at fishing, but we'll still get to eat some trout.
We'll show you how we cooked on a stove and warmed ourselves with hot tea, down jackets, Mars, and an electric radiator.
We'll leave the lake with the help of a group of snowmobilers, who will be a big help with trails and by hauling the sleds to the pass.
We'll show you how we reached the first hut at night and how we spent the day there. In this taiga hut, we'll cook trout over coals and rest all day from the difficult trek.
On the last day of our ski trip, we'll hike 20 kilometers from the taiga hut to the maral farm, where we'll encounter a large ice floe.
We'll show you our camping lifestyle, cooking on a stove, setting up a campsite in winter conditions, and talk about skis, boots, down jackets, and other winter hiking gear.
We'll show you how Mars (our dog) coped with the challenges of the hike and even helped us overcome them.
The wild winter of Altai evoked unforgettable emotions, and this winter hike definitely made it to the top of our adventures. This is what winter tourism in Altai is all about.
