Join Kieran Borgeat, Cardiology (heart) specialist and I as we chat about heart murmurs in dogs, what they mean and how you can help your dog if they have one!
❤️ First of all, don't panic! Dogs can live long and healthy lives with heart murmurs and up to 50% will never need any treatment!
❤️ Having a heart murmur does NOT mean they have heart failure!
❤️ Scanning or x-raying the heart when the murmur is over a grade 3 and starting treatment when it starts to enlarge can give your dog a whole year of great quality, symptom free life!
❤️ If heart failure develops, we can do LOADS to help and have lots of medications to use but everything can be worked around your wishes, budget and your dog.
❤️ Heart failure will progress and worsen over time but we can keep pace with these changes with medication changes.
❤️ As an owner you can have a huge input in the care and monitoring of your pet, which will have a massive impact on their quality and length of life.
❤️ When the end comes, for up to half of dogs it comes quickly with a sudden heart attack, for others we may need to euthanse them because their heart can no longer function well enough to give them a good quality of life, but we should see that as a gift and concentrate on the fabulous life they had - despite their dodgy ticker!
