Two easy tips for great pace-of-play... These two golf rules or golf etiquette tips are for beginning golfers or ANY golfer who needs a little help keeping up a good pace-of-play when playing a round of golf.
The rules of golf book now actually says that "ready golf" is part of the rules, and that means playing out of order as long as you're not distracting any other player, and it's safe. So my first tip is to tee off in the order of the carts at the tee box. Don't lollygag when you reach the tee. The players in the first cart should .leap up and tee off, and then the players in the second cart should do the same. (If you're walking or pushing carts, the same principal applies). The order of play in stroke play format does not matter!
Of course, if you're playing Match Play, you will need to stick to proper order o play with honors at the tee and furthest player from the hole hitting first, but that can also be revised with authorization from your opponent for each time this is done.
If you're behind pace, and can't see the players in the group in front of you just leaving your intended landing area, then you're behind - a half hole, full hole or even more! Don't let that happen as it's tough to catch back up again once you're "out of position" on the golf course.
My second tip is to watch all players balls land and stop rolling. This will help you all know where a player might be (in a bush for example) or if a ball has rolled into a penalty area. That place where the ball "last crossed the edge of the penalty area" will be key in determining the player's "reference point" from which to measure their relief area if they have to take relief from that penalty area, for example.
