"We need to rewrite the rules of the information age because we need a future. A 21st century that is fair, free and innovative. And if we don't rewrite the rules information, if we go on the way we are - in our closed world, a world of exclusive ownership and proprietary rights around information - we will have a world of spiraling inequality, of exclusion, of monopoly, and of a loss of freedom and liberty. Freedom of enterprise, freedom of choice... There's only one Facebook, there's only one Google... And we will also lose our kind of freedom in a more profound sense of our culture of debate, of diversity, and so on. And that's what we have if we don't rewrite the rules information age. If we do, if we write them, to a world of open information, a world in which at the point of use information - that's software, music, movies, statistics, novels, newspapers - are open and free to use, and where we pay innovators and creators more and more fairly using remuneration rights in place of monopoly rights, we will get a world of abundance, and a world of freedom, and a real world that is fair."
