Learn how to gobble with a mouth call as SITKA Ambassador Beau Brooks breaks down the “tocka” method into easy, practice-ready steps.

Beau Brooks—self-described “animal jukebox” and proud SITKA Ambassador—steps in front of the camera to make mouth-call gobbling simple. He admits it can look hard, then slows everything down so you can master each piece before stringing them together.

Start with tongue placement. Beau stresses using the middle of your tongue; if you use the tip, the sound turns “pinchy.” Seat the call on the roof of your mouth and say “tocka” slowly. At first, isolate a single “tocka” and repeat until it feels natural.

Build the rhythm. Once the single note is easy, add a quick “tocka” afterward: “tocka tocka.” As days pass and comfort grows, shorten the spaces and flow into “tocka tocka tocka tocka tocka.” Keep it slow—speed comes later.

Add cheek movement. Beau lightly drags one cheek across to shape the roll: tu-tu-tu-tu. He cups his hands in front of the call to improve tone, demonstrating the difference on camera.

When to use it. Gobbling is Beau’s “last-ditch effort” when pressured birds hang up—especially cagey Easterns down south. Keep the tactic in your arsenal, but deploy it wisely; an ill-timed gobble can backfire, while the right moment can fire turkeys up.

Rewind, practice each phase, and you’ll be ready to talk trash to toms in no time.
