Senior Scientist Heinz Frei talks about making a renewable fuel with sunlight--artificial photosynthesis--on a sufficiently massive scale to have an impact on slowing down climate change.He discusses advances in catalyst materials that drive this reaction more efficiently. He also talks about the methods and technologies scientists use to monitor the individual steps of the catalytic cycle. With new techniques and tools for monitoring the dynamics of the metal electronics state, the coming years should show a much more complete picture of the mechanism of water oxidation, the important reaction for making solar fuels.
