For many years the concept of imprisonment as a form of punishment was entirely foreign to most of Europe, Sure in Scotland we had the Tolbooths where criminals would be held pending trial, but that was it. After the trial no one returned to the Iron cages in the village Tolbooths. If found innocent you were released, but if you were found to be guilty of the crime, you would pay a price, commonly in the form of payment, banishment, mutilation and depending on severity, execution. Yet once the price was paid you were free to return to your daily life. This system functioned without issue for 100s of years, until one odd day in 1724 when Margret Dickenson was to be executed.
