Boards of Canada use a variety of effects, many based on old tape machines, to get their vintage, messed up sound. In interviews they have given love to tragically bad tape machines and the sound they produce, specifically a Grundig with a magic eye valve display that adds unique character.
I set off to create something in this style, using Ableton Live stick plugins. Not a copy but something unique that can be changed and messed around with to create a destroyed vintage sound with a unique edge. Use this to destroy your samples and create something that sounds like it's from the 1970's, have fun!
