Larry Malone Sumerford was born in September of 1940 in Mississippi and died August 19, 2019 in Barton Rouge, Louisiana. Larry lived in Baker Louisiana as a teen. He married Angelia C. Bonacorso in 1959 and they had at three children: one being Angela Dow Sumerford. Judy was the other daughter and also had a son, Micheal. Like his role model (“Mr. Ray” Nethery) Larry used local people and family members as models for his hair styling techniques and styles. Larry’s booklets are laid out like those of “Mr. Ray”, including numerous snap shots of Larry and cameos with his models. He traveled extensively as a “platform artist.” This was considered the height of a hairstylist’s career. He established Larry’s Academy of Hairstyling in Gonzales, LA and branched out into several related businesses.
