James Joyce - Eveline || An ambivalent short story audiobook
Eveline by James Joyce is a classic English literature short story about the impossible decision faced by a young girl -- love or family? Originally published in an Irish circular before Joyce's first book of short stories, Dubliners, this #audiobook explores that decision. Her happiness at leaving this place with her lover -- her first, and incredibly idealized -- contrasts with the duty that she feels toward her family. The known quantity versus the unknown. To stay, or to go.
It's one of those stories which is better because it leaves you with a deep uncertainty, even though you probably know how the story ends. It almost calls to mind the circular nature of Joyce's later novel Finnegan's Wake, which intentionally ends and begins with a fragment of the same sentence.

🗣 "Derevaun seraun" is loosely translated as "the end of pleasure is pain." It can refer to both the happiness Eveline feels now with Frank -- implying that it's temporary and will end in the same ruin as her parents' relationship -- or the unhappiness she feels toward her now-abusive father.
