----------------------------

"Lost Castle" is a roguelike side scroller beat 'em up, with randomly generated dungeons and a huge variety of items and weapons. Each life you try to fight through 5 levels and bosses to clear the game, but when you die, you return to the very start. However, to make things easier for the next run, larger enemies drop souls that can be exchanged for permanent bonuses or stat-upgrades. The game supports up to four players in online or local co-op mode, as well as a hardcore mode and modifiers for extra difficulty.

The combat is very basic but satisfying. There are 7 main weapon types with a host of variations, but what you start each life with is random and really impacts how you play. Additionally, theres a huge range of items and skills adding diversity to each play through. It's mostly a challenging but fair game. Unfortunately, you cannot cancel your animations or dodge while attacking, which will be responsible for a lot of your deaths. Bad RNG is also a significant issue, but the constant sense of progression and power growth does somewhat abate these issues.

The main issue with the game is balancing. Some weapons and items are clearly superior to others, making the game too easy or too hard depending on your luck. The cost of upgrades rises drastically too, while improvements are generally piecemeal, so there will be times where progress will feel as if it stalls and the game becomes extremely grindy. This is particularly an issue as the dungeon randomness adds very little, and you find yourself constantly replaying slight variations of the early levels.

In conclusion, it's a game that does a lot, but doesn't really excel in any aspect. It's a decent game, with multiplayer providing hours of fun, but the experience is too slow and repetitive to be fun for solo players.
