Amir Timur -- better known in the West as Tamerlane -- was one of the most fearsome conquerors of the medieval world, second only to Genghis Khan. At its height, his Timurid Empire stretched from Ankara to Delhi. Undefeated on the battlefield, Timur was a ruthless military leader and tactician, but his stable rule ushered in an intellectual and culture renaissance, and gave birth to some of the finest examples of art and architecture on the Silk Road.In this fascinating talk, our guest expert, Sophie Ibbotson, talks about this controversial figure, his legacy, and why he was chosen as the national hero of Uzbekistan.
