Learn how Mississippi Delta Chinese raised in the segregated South overcame challenges and why this history is important to all Americans during this virtual panel discussion with former Greenville, Mississippi residents Carolyn Chan (Past Nat’l President, Chinese American Citizens Alliance), Stan Lou (Past Nat’l VP, OCA Asian Pacific American Advocates) and Emily Jones (Curator & Archivist, MS Delta Chinese Heritage Museum, Delta State University). They are featured in the new documentary, Far East Deep South. Carolyn and Stan shares more in depth about attending a Chinese only school due to Jim Crow laws, their struggles with Asian American identity, how they persevered in the face of challenges and what lessons we can learn today from the past. Along the way, they meet a diverse group of local residents and historians, who shed light on the racially complex history of the early Chinese in the segregated South. Their emotional journey leads them to discover how deep their roots run in America.
