What's going on at the Gordie Howe Bridge?
As icy winds sweep across the Detroit River, the Gordie Howe International Bridge stands tall, a testament to international cooperation and engineering excellence. The frozen river below, marked by freighter trails, creates a breathtaking winter panorama.

Welcome to another WinAir Update on this marvel nearing its September 2025 completion, with the first vehicle expected to cross in fall of this year. At 0.53 miles, it will be North America's longest cable-stayed bridge, set to revolutionize regional transportation and trade.

As we fly over the bridge in January 2025 we visit the project in its final stages. It is a cold Sunday, but on a weekday, we'd see crews busy installing various systems such as:
• Aesthetic, roadway, pedestrian, and navigation lighting
• A weather station and bridge monitoring system
• Fire alarms and an intelligent transportation system
• A fire suppression system with hydrants and actuated valves

Okay, so what else is going on at the Gordie Howe bridge
I'd say quite a bit. The expansion joint is being built on site and closer to being installed to complete the bridge and road decks. It seems to be taking a long time to complete, however, the modular expansion joints being installed are sophisticated components that require careful installation. The process can take approximately four to six weeks and involves multiple steps.
Ongoing work also includes drainage outlets, stormwater management ponds, landscaping, and paving around the ports of entry. I'm sure some of this work will wait on warmer weather.
An interesting addition is the Peregrine Falcon nesting box, yet to be installed as of January 28, 2025. Located below the bridge deck with a remote-operated camera, it's part of broader conservation efforts.
Other initiatives include new prairie and pollinator habitats, and the relocation of at-risk plants and seeds from the project area.
There is a lot going on to get this bridge built. It's cool to watch happen.
The Gordie Howe Bridge will prove to be a blessing between Detroit and Windsor. It will reduce congestion on city streets bypassing downtown Windsor to eliminate bottlenecks and delays. The direct link between Interstate 75 in Detroit and Highway 401 in Windsor will save time and money and frustration for truckers and travellers.
Despite the cold, the project remains on schedule for a September 2025 completion. Join the journey as we capture the final touches leading to the grand opening of the Gordie Howe Bridge. It can't be too soon!
