Boris, the founder and CEO of Baseline, discussed how his company builds observability tooling for serverless architectures and how they have been able to build an innovation engine thanks to the great observability they are building. He discussed the importance of understanding user needs and how to evaluate user feedback effectively. Boris also talked about the Dora metrics and the Accelerate book that gave them a scientific basis to measure their team's performance. He explained that to measure team performance, you need to answer a few questions such as deployment frequency, lead time, change failure rate, and meantime to recovery. Baseline has a bonus question, mess around lead time, which is how long it takes from customer insight to production. He explained how observability driven development works and the importance of testing in production. He emphasised the need to build a culture that fosters more ownership by engineers and to democratise production to the entire team. Finally, he highlighted the importance of observability and spending less time managing tech debt.
