Networking plays a crucial role in the job search process by expanding your opportunities, accessing hidden job markets, receiving recommendations and referrals, gaining insider information, , developing valuable skills, and building a support system.

According to Ryan, you need to be strategic with: who you network with, what you networking about, and why you network

Some reasons are why networking helps during the job search and even before you search:

1. Access to Hidden Opportunities: Many job opportunities are never advertised publicly. They are often filled through personal connections and referrals. By networking, you expand your reach and gain access to these hidden job opportunities that may not be accessible through traditional job search methods.
2. Personal Recommendations and Referrals: When you build a strong network, you increase your chances of receiving personal recommendations and referrals from your connections. These recommendations carry significant weight with employers, as they come from trusted individuals who can vouch for your skills and qualifications.
3. Gathering Insider Information: Networking allows you to connect with professionals who work in your target industry or specific companies. By building relationships with them, you can gain valuable insider information about the job market, company culture, industry trends, and potential job openings. This knowledge can give you a competitive edge and help you tailor your job search strategy accordingly.
4. Skill Development and Mentorship: Through networking, you can connect with professionals who have advanced skills and expertise in your desired field. Building relationships with these individuals can provide opportunities for mentorship, allowing you to learn from their experiences and acquire valuable knowledge and insights. They can also offer guidance on skill development, helping you grow and progress in your career.
5. Building a Support System: Job searching can be a challenging and sometimes frustrating process. Networking allows you to build a support system of like-minded professionals who understand your career goals and challenges. They can provide emotional support, encouragement, and advice, which can help you stay motivated and focused during your job search journey.

Make sure you add value to the relationship and it’s not about YOU all the time.
