In today's video, I'm going to teach you how to collect a 24-hour urine sample and explain why this test is necessary.

The summary of this video is here:

1) WHY DO I NEED TO DO THIS TEST?
A 24-hour urine sample is used to evaluate kidney function. In addition, it allows us to assess whether the kidney is losing protein (which is the first sign of kidney damage caused by diabetes) or losing too much calcium (in the case of people undergoing treatment for osteoporosis).

2) HOW SHOULD I COLLECT THE URINE?

A – The urine should be collected in an empty 1.5-liter plastic bottle of still mineral water. Even well-washed soda bottles can leave residue and interfere with the test results.

B – Collection should always begin the day before the blood test (for example, if you are going to have your blood drawn on Monday, start collecting urine on Sunday).

C – On the first day of collection, the first urine of the day (upon waking) should be discarded, as this urine actually reflects kidney filtration during the previous night. Therefore, you should start collecting urine from the second urine of the first day until the first urine of the following day. You must collect ALL the urine of the day, including during the night, during showering, etc. You cannot lose any sample, otherwise it will not be a good estimate of the 24 hours. More than one bottle can be used; the important thing is to collect all the urine.

D – If necessary, a funnel can be used for better urine collection.

E – The urine should be stored in the refrigerator until it is taken to the laboratory.

F – On the second day of collection, put the first urine of the day with the others and go to the laboratory to have your blood drawn.

I hope you like it!
