After years of a declining body of work, I believe Matrix Resurrection is the crescendo of talented filmmakers losing their way, granted it was a solo work by Lana... as evidence of, their previous films though, the Matrix sequels, Speed Racer, Cloud Atlas, Jupiter Ascending, and although I enjoyed Sense8, I am noticing a downward trend of clarity of filmmaking that can only be marked because of such highpoints in their early career from of course, the original Matrix to… V for Vendetta, which I will be digging into here, where they were the writers and producers of, not the directors. And although some of the previous films all have merit, and I understand why people like Cloud Atlas or feel Speed Racer is better than we give it credit, or Matrix Resurrection is so meta that if you didn’t like it… it’s because you didn’t get it… or some other circular reasoning.
However, I think if you study the beats of a screenplay, the pacing of the plot, you will see precisely why a story works or why it doesn’t… and why it resonates past some cerebral affection to it… because what works, again… if a film is well paced, with a conflict that has high stakes, in a world that is interesting, with a hero that is complex and has an arc that we can connect to… with a pay-off for the audience within that conflict, after they’ve invested a 115 minutes of their time… then typically… these story elements will generally be well received by a collective audience, if not be chided for being too formulaic, but it will be well received whether or not the audience recognizes why the film works or be able to see the formula behind the scenes, used by almost all writers and filmmakers when conceiving and executing a film… it’s like enjoying fine cuisine without knowing all the ingredients of the dish and how, precisely, it was prepared… So, this is my goal, is to break down films, like V for Vendetta, so we recognize why a movie connects if you’re a movie-goer… and how these positive effects can have some general, collective resonance, and be replicated if you’re a storyteller… and what that says about the filmmakers, such as the Wachoskis.
