This channel is a space for exploring the essence of life based on the teachings of the Buddha and seeking together a path to liberation from suffering. Everyone experiences suffering, both big and small, as they go through life. The Buddha taught us that there is a way to resolve suffering.
Main Teachings of the Diamond Sutra:
One must realize that all phenomena have no substance and are empty.
The practice of giving without attachment.
One must abandon the four attachments of self-image, person-image, sentient being-image, and life-image.
All phenomena have no substance and nothing is immutable.
"One should give rise to the mind without dwelling on anything."
The Diamond Sutra is composed in the form of a dialogue between the Buddha and Elder Subhuti, explaining the impermanence of all phenomena and the wisdom of non-duality. This sutra is considered particularly important in Zen Buddhism, and it is said that the Sixth Patriarch Huineng attained enlightenment upon hearing this sutra. The teachings of the Diamond Sutra help us realize that all the concepts and phenomena we cling to in daily life lack substance, and present a method for living wisely without attachment.
The Four Noble Truths are the most important teachings the Buddha expounded for the first time after attaining enlightenment. Through them, we can learn why life is painful, what the causes are, and how to escape suffering and live a peaceful life.
First, the *Noble Truth of Suffering* refers to all the suffering we experience. From the moment of birth through the process of aging, illness, and death, we experience suffering both great and small. The sorrow of parting with loved ones, the regret of failing to achieve what we desire, and the anxiety felt in a constantly changing world—all of these constitute the essence of ‘suffering.’
Second, the *Noble Truth of the Origin of Suffering* explains the causes of suffering. The reason we suffer is due to desire and attachment. When the craving to obtain what we want, the attachment to not letting go of what we have obtained, and the desire to avoid what we dislike accumulate, they eventually lead to suffering. Third, the *Noble Truth of the Cessation of Suffering* is a message of hope that we can be free from suffering. If we can cast aside attachment and desire, we can live a free life no longer swayed by suffering. This state is called ‘Nirvana,’ and it is the realm of ultimate peace and enlightenment.
Fourth, the *Noble Truth of the Path to the Cessation of Suffering* presents the method for eliminating suffering. The Buddha taught that one can attain enlightenment by practicing the ‘Noble Eightfold Path.’ Right understanding, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration—by following these eight paths, we can gradually live a wise and peaceful life.
