We recently received some Haas solid-carbide, coolant-thru, DLC-coated drills, made specifically for drilling aluminum, and in this video we'll try one out.
The drill we're using is .2008 inches in diameter (that's 5.1mm). It's sized to make a hole that can be threaded with a ¼-20 tap. We’re going to use an ER-16 collet chuck with a special coolant-sealing ER-16 collet.
Check out the very small coolant holes in the tip of the drill. You'll see the considerable jets of coolant flowing out of those tiny coolant ports.
We’re using the recommended cutting parameters. 12,700 RPM and an impressive vertical feedrate of 95 inches per minute.
The result: 4 holes all the way through ¾ inch thick aluminum, in just 5 seconds.
