How Much MULCH Do You Really Need for Your Garden?

Considerations:
-Tools - you'll need a wheelbarrow, shovel, gardening gloves.
-Plan for lots of time - covering these gardens took about 6 hours in total! No gym time needed for me that weekend!!
-Edge your gardens before mulching to define the garden beds and keep your grass from growing into your gardens.
-Consider boulevard gardens, but look into your municipal by-laws, height requirements, and salt tolerance before taking the time and energy to put these in place.
Mulch thickness: I leave the leaves from last year, which also act as mulch, so I don’t need too much in terms of thickness. I aim for about 1-2 inches, depending on the area, and how much is left from last year.
My garden dimensions / calculations:
Front gardens = 870 square feet of gardens
Back gardens = 470 square feet of gardens
Total = 1340 square feet of gardens on my property
Google suggests that one cubic yard of mulch should cover about 324 square feet of space with about 1 inch of mulch. That doesn’t take into consideration the plants that you are mulching around, or if you want to have a thicker base of mulch, so keep that in mind when planning. Based on these calculations, I could have thought I would need about 4 cubic yards of mulch. However, the 2.5 cubic yards that I received was more than enough for my gardens (1340 square feet of gardens).
