Into the Páramo: 6 Days in the Colombian Andes
In the summer of 2023, my partner Marcelo and I set off on a journey to explore the Colombian Andes. We teamed up with Páramo Trek to plan an expedition through Los Nevados National Natural Park, aiming to conquer the 5220m Nevado del Tolima, a challenging stratovolcano even for experienced mountaineers.
Our excitement was palpable, but after months of preparation, the park was closed due to volcanic activity. Páramo Trek worked tirelessly to create an alternative itinerary, allowing us to fully experience the Andes without needing to enter the closed park.
Our six days in the Andes brought unexpected twists and turns, from trekking through tropical rainforests near Murillo and Salento to exploring the high-Andean páramo ecosystem. Despite the changes, one thing became clear: you can't have fixed expectations when hiking in the Colombian Andes.
