Does an undercoat of PVA make a difference to painting plastic? Does it make the decoration more durable? Does it mean less coats of paint?
This experiment try's to answer those questions by taking 7 samples of a plastic barrel.
Each sample is part painted with PVA then coated with: interior gloss (Dulux), exterior gloss (International) , exterior undercoat (Leyland) , interior eggshell (Leyland), Artists Acrylic (Winsor Newton), Plasticote spray paint and Hammerite spray paint.
The initial conclusion is that a coat of PVA saves you a second coat of paint! A significant cost/time saving.
However, the real goal is to find out which one resists scratching, scraping and banging the most.
I am told that acrylic will perform as well as the others. I hope so. Let's see what the experiment tells us.
