In this video I am going to share the information about guggulu shodhana or purification of guggulu.
Guggulu is one of the most important medicine ingredients in Ayurveda. Guggulu is a resin which is used as binding agent in ayurveda preparation.
Guggulu has a unique property to decrease cholesterol level and relieve inflammation of the joints.
Guggulu has a botanical name as Commiphora mukul under the family Burseraceae.
To use guggulu for medicine purpose, the purification is needed as guggulu resin is collected from guggulu plant as has a lot of impurities such as dry leaves, soil, stone or may be sands as well.
Here is the way of guggulu purification or guggulu shodhana:
In this guggulu shodhana, we use triphala kashaya or decoction of triphala. First we prepared the decoction of triphala. The decoction was prepared for 3 liters with the formula 1 part of triphala added by 16 parts of water then boiled until it was reduced to a quarter of the water. The decoction then filtered with clothes.
The raw guggulu then crushed into small pieces then bandaged with 2 layers of clothes in the form of pottali. It was tied well then hanged with a wooden stick inside the vessel containing the decoction of triphala. So the pottali must not touch the ground of the vessel.
Then the heating starts by using moderate flame. The hot decoction will melt the guggulu, so the guggulu able to be transferred from the bandage to the decoction slowly. It was needed to give force for straining guggulu into liquid media.
After some period of time the purification was completed then the strained guggulu was dried up under the sunlight. When completely dry, the guggulu can be powdered and stored in an airtight container for further use.
