30 vs 50 Amp RVs - How Many Appliances?
How many appliances can you run inside your RV at the same time? It depends on how many watts each appliance draws. Let’s do the math and see how many watts you have to work with.
30 amp RVs (30 amps x 120 volts = 3,600 watts)
50 amp RVs (2 lines x 50 amps x 120 volts = 12,000 watts)
15/20 Amp Outlets
Most houses have 15 amp outlets and campgrounds usually have 20 amp outlets.
Houses (15 amp x 120 volts = 1,800 watts)
Campgrounds (20 amp x 120 volts = 2,200 watts)
You can only use 80% of the total watts continuously. This means running all the appliances without giving them a break to cycle on and off. Example: Running your A/C non-stop on a hot day. If you are trying to use all of your appliances at the same time, then you’ll want to use the 80% number below.
30 amp (3,600 x 80% = 2,880 watts)
50 amp (12,000 x 80% = 9,600 watts)
15 Amp House (1,800 x 80% = 1,440 watts)
20 Amp Campground (2,200 x 80% = 1,760 watts)
You can quickly see that you do not have many watts to work with on a 30 amp RV or if you’re plugged in to the 20 amp outlet at your house or campground.
