Sleeping sickness or lethargic encephalitis
Atypical form of encephalitis. The disease was first described in 1917 by the Austrian psychiatrist and neurologist Konstantin von Economo, therefore it is also called Economo's disease, who observed an epidemic outbreak of this disease in 1915 near Verdun. No new cases have been reported in recent decades. As with other diseases, lethargic encephalitis is characterized by two stages: acute and chronic. They are preceded by an incubation period of 4 to 15 days.
The acute stage begins hard. It is manifested by increasing fever, nausea, vomiting, “bursting” headaches, which are sometimes easily confused with the symptoms of meningitis. Since the symptoms are very severe, this often leads patients to a state of mental agitation, which is expressed in confusion, loss of orientation in space, and sometimes in visual hallucinations. In some cases, patients can fall into a state of complete immobility and silence. It is also characterized by convulsions of the limbs, double vision, paralysis or flaccid paresis of the facial nerves. Acute symptoms are gradually replaced by manifestations of lethargy. The patient becomes lethargic, reluctant to make contact, his speech is inhibited, he wants to sleep all the time.
