This program originally streamed on September 17, 2022.

Families learn about food culture and traditions through recipes and stories.

Presenters with Lyles Station (Legacy Taste of the Garden) and Urban Seeds will teach youth ages 8 through 10 (Grades 3-5) how to prepare a recipe while connecting them to the local food system. We encourage you to prepare a dish to share with your family and start a dialogue about the cooking tradition in your family.

Recipe: Zucchini Chocolate Chip Cookies (Makes 30 cookies) 🍪

Ingredients
• Napa Cabbage, grated or thinly chopped
• 1 medium carrot, grated
• Cilantro, a ½ bunch, chopped, removing stems is optional
• 1 egg white
• 1 large sweet pepper, minced
• Minced ginger (1-inch)
• ½ T sesame oil
• Salt and pepper, to taste
• 1 package of potsticker wrappers
• Sweet and sour sauce, for dipping

Preparation:

1. Spread cabbage, carrots, and cilantro over a clean dish towel. Gather up towel and squeeze out as much moisture from the cabbage as possible.

2. Transfer cabbage, carrots, and cilantro to a bowl. Add egg whites, sweet pepper, ginger, and sesame oil. Mix thoroughly with your hands. Season with salt and pepper.

3. Cover baking sheet with waxed paper. Fill a small bowl with water.

4. Hold a potsticker wrapper in the palm of your hand. Place a tablespoonful of the filling mixture in the center. Dip a finger in water and use it to wet the edges of the wrapper. Fold up edges and pinch together to seal. Transfer dumpling to a prepared baking sheet. Repeat with remaining wrappers and veggie mixture.

5. Place the filled dumplings on the baking sheet. Place in the oven and bake at 325 degrees F for 10-15 minutes or until they are lightly crisp. Serve hot with sweet and sour sauce.
