Tonight I’m diving into the Hephaestus Challenge in Elite Dangerous — a no-engineering Medusa kill meant for pilots who actually enjoy suffering. No engineering, no training wheels, just raw mechanics, heat management, panic sinks, and a Medusa that REALLY wants me dead.

I’ve soloed thousands of goids, but this challenge hits different. Every heart cycle forces you to actually understand the Thargoid: how it tracks, how it turns, how to keep the tail pinned on the left side of your screen, and how to control heat without melting your ship. Between spiking during attack runs, double-sinking at the right second, and keeping a clean hot orbit while the swarm tries to erase me from the universe, this fight becomes a masterclass in AX fundamentals.

With only 18 shots left to crack the next heart, an AFMU desperately patching my mistakes, and my ship barely surviving on pure speed and fear, the Hephaestus Challenge proves exactly why these rank runs are so much fun — they force you to learn deeper mechanics, stay disciplined, and adapt under pressure.

If you want to see unengineered AX combat, Medusa heart cycles, hot orbits, and an actually chaotic—but successful—run from a “decent pilot rank” perspective, this is the one.
