Is Snow White Actually Too Young?
This is also where we learn that the prince isn’t supposed to be singing a song to Snow White because the Evil Queen has ordered that all troubadour songs be sung only about her. So Snow White urges the prince away for his safety, and he responds with, “All right, I’ll go and 💀 a dragon for you.” 😂
We see the dragon storyline come back in a different way for Sleeping Beauty a few years later when they were struggling to write that script (because Walt Disney was so preoccupied with building Disneyland). Many elements from the novelization or deleted scenes from Snow White made it into subsequent storylines for other movies as well, including Cinderella & Sleeping Beauty.
As for Snow White’s age, she is supposed to be 14 & only about “five hands high” according to Marc Davis, who worked on Snow White as an assistant animator for his first job at Disney studios. The novelization isn’t clear about exactly how many seasons had passed before the prince finds her in the coffin. It seems to imply that it was one circle of the seasons, and he finds her in springtime, but it also mentions he never forgot about her. The aactual timing of her being found and how much time passes before she gets married to the prince is somewhat ambiguous.
“Thus the little Princess slept through the seasons. In autumn she lay under a coverlet of beautiful leaves, in winter under a blanket of ermine. The lonely Prince searched far and wide for his lost Snow White, whom he had never ceased to love. When spring came, he heard of the beautiful maiden in the glass coffin in the forest… in the glass coffin lay the beautiful maiden—his own beloved Snow White.”
