Making a big knife in a small shed
This is my first serious attempt at making a working knife. I used 1070 steel sourced from GFS Knife supplies in the UK because the heat treating process is relatively easy. I watched a ton of youtube videos on knife making before attempting this - I found OUTDOORS55, Gough Custom, Walter Sorrels and Simple Little Life channels particularly helpful with good tips for people like me who don't have all the professional tools. I was also really inspired by Peter Adamson Knives channel - who created some beautiful looking knives using fairly basic tools.
I used an old 8 inch B&Q file to make the bevels but soon realised that it was not at all suitable for the job so I ordered two new Bahco files while I pressed on - they arrived after I had completed the bevels.
My workshop/shed is tiny - just 4ft x6ft so this was quite a challenge. The process has given me a real appreciation of the art of professional knife making. The finished knife is far from perfect visually but it cuts just fine and I'm very proud of it. For those interested - the handle is made of Yew - I was lucky to be given a box of mixed wood offcuts by a woodworker.
There is a bit of steel left over so I might just have a go at making another knife at some stage in the near future...enjoy.
