The story of Gideon and the 300 soldiers is found in the book of Judges, chapter 7. Here’s how it unfolded:
God called Gideon to lead Israel against the Midianites. Initially, Gideon gathered 32,000 soldiers for battle. However, God told Gideon that the army was still too large. He instructed Gideon to ask the soldiers, “Whoever is afraid or trembling may go back home.” 22,000 soldiers left, leaving 10,000 behind. God continued to refine the army. At the water, Gideon observed how the soldiers drank. Those who lapped water with their hands to their mouths were 300 men, while the rest kneeled to drink. God chose these 300 men to fight the Midianites. Gideon separated them into three companies, gave them trumpets and lit torches, and led them to victory. With only 300 soldiers, Gideon defeated the Midianite army, demonstrating that it was God’s power, not human strength, that secured the victory.
