The invasions of foreign peoples surrounding the Roman Empire, which constantly forced its armies to fight to defend its borders, were one of the main causes of Rome's fall.
These peoples, called barbarians by the Romans because they did not speak the languages of the empire, instilled fear in the citizens who lived in the border cities.
