BotsIQ is most well-known for our Combat Robotics Program. Working with expert guidance from their high school teachers and industry mentors, BotsIQ students work in teams during the academic year to design and build 15 lb. combat robots to battle in a gladiator-style competition. The competitions are something that the students can get excited about, but the real-world goal of BotsIQ is to provide a setting where students develop in-demand, technical skills in mechanical and electrical engineering, machining, 3D printing, and welding, along with 21st century skills in critical thinking, project management, communication and teamwork. Each year, we engage over 40 schools and hundreds of students across Southwestern Pennsylvania and beyond.
Our Combat Robotics program is FREE for all participating schools (we even give them a small grant each year to participate on top of providing numerous free trainings throughout the year for students and teachers alike). Most of our schools build their bots by using mills and lathes (or by connecting with industry partners who use mills and lathes), but having a Gigabot for students to use would allow us to introduce a new technology into the robot manufacturing process because we do not have printers that can make parts that are big enough or strong enough for a combat robot. With a Gigabot, 3D printing would be utilized for more than just prototyping- it would be a new skill for schools to hone to take their bots to the next level!
