Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has honestly left me speechless with its sheer level of quality and passion. It's crazy to think this is the first game released by Sandfall Interactive—and even crazier that most of the developers behind it are inexperienced junior or entry-level individuals. Yet, they’ve managed to deliver a video game with a deep and emotional story, compelling characters and worldbuilding, beautifully crafted environments with stunning art direction, great exploration, meaningful side content, top-notch voice and motion acting, and—among many other things—a revolutionary combat system that breathes new life into the turn-based JRPG genre, which many believed was dead or, at best, somewhat stale.
Most importantly, this game sends a powerful message to the entire industry: that things MUST change, and that the harmful practices that have become common as of late are not necessary to create a masterful experience like this one.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 achieves AAA-level quality without the need for a massive budget or any of those methods, and shows that the future of the industry might have to go through smaller and passionate teams like this one that bring the whole industry meaning.
This is a generational masterpiece that honors and respects the games that came before it while it also knows that it can be so much more -- finding a way to bring new players into the genre, and carving a new path forward for the games that will come next.
