While cursing and staring, with the stink eye, at my HP P400 Batteries: I came up with an idea. Replace the battery with a generic 4.8V one.
At first I thought I'd cut open the battery casing and get access to the wiring. Then I saw the PCB doesn't go to the battery. I then saw that the PCB is just sitting atop the battery terminals. The PCB is easily removed and you are free to solder on a 4.8V Ni-Mh battery.
