We start our tour at Mariahilferplatz, passing the floating Murinsel (Mur Island) towards Schlossbergplatz. From there, we climb the dolomite hill via the Kriegssteig (War Path) and the terrace of the Herberstein Garden – 260 steps lead us to the 473 m high summit.
A faster way to reach the Schlossberg is by taking the Schlossberg lift or the Schlossbergbahn funicular, which has been in operation since 1894.
The Graz Clock Tower is a curiosity in itself. The hour and minute hands are reversed, which has led to some confused time-checking among visitors.
At the beginning of the 19th century – during the Napoleonic conquest – almost all the fortifications were demolished – only the bell tower and the clock tower remained.
The bronze sculpture of a lion honors Major Franz Hackher, who, in 1809, defended the Schlossberg (Castle Hill) against the advancing French with "a handful of soldiers."
Also located on the northern plateau is the enchanting cistern, dating from the Renaissance and surrounded by a small park.
