The quality of the insulation used and workmanship during installation is a direct reflection on how energy efficient your house will be. Its important to understand what insulation thickness will fit in what walls and to maximize that space. For example R-21 or R-19 will fit in a 2x6 wall while R-15 or R-13 will fit in a 2x4 wall.

Insulation is a fairly easy step in the home building process and is a common task taken on by DIY'ers. Keep in mind that over compressed insulation lowers the R-value and any missed gaps or cracks are a free ride for heated or cooled air to escape.

Additionally each state is going to adopt minimum code requirements for new construction. Be sure to check with your local building department to understand what those requirements are.
