Mountaineering Gone Wrong - Shishapangma Expedition Disaster
Shishapangma is the 14th-tallest mountain in the world. It stands at 8,027 meters and is one of the great Himalayan peaks. this is one of the least-climbed 8,000-meter peaks at its real summit. Only 165 of Pimas' claims that he reached the top of Manaslu have been proven true, so many of his claims have been disputed. Real peak, instead of the lower peak In 1964, a Chinese LED expedition reached the top of Shishapangma for the first time, which could be proven. They reached the top on May 2, making it the last of the world's 14 8,000-meter peaks to be climbed. To do this, you must cross a dangerously thin ridge that can take up to an hour to get across.
Since it is the only 8,000-meter Himalayan peak that is entirely in China, and because of the country's ongoing political unrest, foreign mountaineers were not allowed to climb it.
This had less to do with the mountain's technical difficulty and more with its location. Tibet as well. Shishapangma isn't as steep as the other 8,000-meter Himalayas and Peaks, but its slopes aren't too steep either. This makes it known as one of the easier 8,000-meter mountains on Earth. Avalanches are scary, large-scale disasters that often hit the slopes of mountains. Avalanches happen because slopes are the perfect place for them to happen. In the late Himalayan and climbing season of 1999, a group of mountaineers and skiers set out for Shishapangma . Their goal was to climb the peak and then ski down.
Then, this expedition team was put together so that a movie could be made about their trip. Alex Lowe and Conrad Anchor, two experienced mountain climbers, are on the nine-person expedition crew for the movie. Also on the crew are skiers from the Himalayas and newcomers Chris Erickson and David Bridges.
