How To Safely Add Muriatic Acid to a Swimming Pool | Orenda Procedures
This video shows how to safely add muriatic acid to a swimming pool. Muriatic acid (or Hydrochloric acid) reduces total alkalinity and pH in water.
To learn how to reduce alkalinity in a pool, you not only need to know how to safely add acid but also how to dose acid. There are many types of acid used in swimming pools beyond muriatic acid. there is sulfuric acid, which is a liquid and follows the same procedure as shown in this video. You can also use a dry acid called sodium bisulfate. Sodium bisulfate needs to be measured dry and pre-dissolved in a bucket of water prior to being added around the perimeter of the pool.

How to lower pH and alkalinity with acid
1. Put on all appropriate safety gear. Glasses, gloves, and if you are a sloppy worker, a plastic smock or apron. You cannot be too careful with acid...it can burn you quickly and leave permanent scarring.
2. Use a glass or plastic measuring cup to measure the dose of liquid acid. Do NOT inhale near the acid, as its fumes are harmful and noxious.
3. Fill a bucket up at least halfway with water from the pool, then add the measured acid into the bucket to pre-dilute it.
4. Pour around the perimeter of the deep end.
Orenda advises against "column pouring" because muriatic acid is heavier than water. It will sink to the bottom of the pool and can damage the surface.
