He then executed a meticulously planned attack on his family members, starting with his mother, Susan, and subsequently his brothers, Alexander and Christopher, who became unintended witnesses to the horror.
The tragic events of that day did not end with the murders. The oldest brother, Leighland, narrowly escaped death, and the gruesome scene was discovered only after a violent confrontation between Brett and his surviving sibling. Brett's arrest on the front porch of their family home marked the end of the murderous spree, but the beginning of a long and painful quest for justice and understanding by the community and Brett's fiancée, Kristen.
Brett Ryan pleaded guilty to the charges against him, including second-degree murder for his mother and brother AJ, and first-degree murder for his brother Chris. He was sentenced to life in prison, with the possibility of parole in 2041. The Crossbow Murders remain a stark reminder of the destructive power of deceit and the depths to which some will go to protect a lie.
