David Date is an artist, designer and fabricator based in Santa Cruz, CA. He has produced interactive kinetic sculptures for Burning Man, including Honoraria piece Myriapoda Robota (2018) 30’ Mechanical Centipede from the future, and MerKaBa Portal (2019)
MerKaBa Portal is an interactive sculpture that is propelled by both the wind and its participants. Laser cut stainless steel panels are fastened together into a Star Tetrahedron, suspended on a stationary post and bearing. As the sculpture spins, a chain and sprocket drives a DC energy generator and charges batteries for embedded light displays.
