IMPORTANT UPDATE: During the part of the video where we convert the symbols and text to UTF-16, please watch this instead of that part:    • [3DS] UPDATE ON: How To Edit Mii Names W/ ...   Return to the video after you've completed this the proper way.

Today I'll be showing you how to get custom letters, symbols, or icons on your Mii! This requires a little bit of time and patience. If it doesn't work, look back over the steps and try again. No one has ever made a tutorial video of this - until now! A written version is below, but you can follow the video if you want.

--WHAT YOU WILL NEED--
1) Nintendo 3DS
2) SD Card
3) extdata_dump tool (Link below)
4) HxD Hex Editor (Link Below)
5) FixCRC Program (Link Below)
6) Cubic Ninja / Ninjhax (Link Below)

--TUTORIAL--
This is the easiest and most effective way to do this (RAM hacks are actually easiest, just not publically released). Comment any questions you have about this, I'll be happy to help.

1) Start up your 3DS and launch Mii maker.
2) Make & save a new Mii; be sure to DISABLE sharing and copying.
3) Download extdata_dump tool and extract it to sd:\3ds\
4) Run it from The Homebrew Launcher and choose "Dump all extdata to sd"
5) Wait for it to finish. It usually freezes at /data.dat for about 2 minutes.
6) Exit the app by pressing B and turn off your 3DS.
7) Eject the SD card.
8) Insert your 3DS's SD card into your computer that has HxD & FixCRC.
9) Open up CFL_DB.dat in HxD. It can be found in sd:\3ds\extdata_dump\dumps\f000000b\.
10) Make careful edits to your Mii's data. Documents are on 3dbrew about where data is stored.
11) Resave the file to the extdata_dump folder on your SD card (Still named CFL_DB.dat).
12) Save the file to the FixCRC folder (Still named CFL_DB.dat).
13) Run FixCRC.bat
14) Save a note of the value that came out.
15) Go back into HxD, still with CFL_DB.dat open.
16) Press CTRL+G on your keyboard, and enter 'C81E' in the textbox, and then press enter.
17) Type the 4 character value that came of FixCRC. Don't highlight anything, just start typing.
18) Resave the file to the extdata_dump folder where the config is.
19) Eject your SD Card and put it back into your 3DS.
20) Launch up the extdata_dump tool from The Homebrew Launcher.
21) Hit "Restore extdata specified in config."
22) Wait for it to finish.
23) Exit The Homebrew Launcher
24) Go to your Mii maker to see your new, edited Mii!

--FAQ--

Q: What does FixCRC do?
A: It updates your checksum. Without FixCRC, this entire method would not work.

Q: Will this brick or harm my 3DS?
A: No. The most 'harmful' thing it might do is delete the Mii that you attempted to edit.

Q: IT DOESN'T WORK!!!1!!!!!!1!!!!!!
A: Make sure you followed the video completely. I started from step 1 so that I could do this along with the video.

Q: Will this ever get patched?
A: On 9.2.0 or below, no. Anything above 9.2.0 - yes. Ninjhax is already patched on the latest update, and obviously this won't work without Ninjhax.

Thanks for watching! I hope this helped you :) Soon we'll be able to get complete custom letters and symbols like on the Wii! Stay tuned, I'll update the description of this video occasionally. Subscribe for more awesome, never-before-seen tutorials. I'm working on hacks for Mario Kart 7. :)
