Observing a rise in alarm chain pulling (ACP) in trains for frivolous reasons, the railway authorities have appealed to passengers to stay away from such practices that are punishable offences.
“The Indian Railways has provided the option of chain pulling in different trains to be used during emergency purposes only. Of late it is been seen that passengers are resorting to the ACP for frivolous reasons like arriving late and alighting or boarding at intermediate stations,” authorities from the Central Railway (CR) that caters to parts of Marathwada said.
Highlighting that the act of ACP in train not only affects the running of the train, but also has a cascading effect on the trains that follow behind, the authorities said misuse of the system was adversely affecting the punctuality of trains.
Unnecessary use of the chain is a punishable offence under section 141 of the Railways Act and the penalty includes imprisonment of up to one year or fine of Rs 1,000 or both.
From April to July this year, the Mumbai division of the Central Railway has registered 1,230 cases of unreasonable ACP cases. Out of these, about 1,143 passengers have been prosecuted and fine Rs 7.59 lakh. The related data for Solapur division, which caters to Latur and Beed districts among other areas from Marathwada, was not available till Monday evening,
