What concrete is used for flooring?
Floor mixes usually contain Type I or Type II portland cement. Shrinkage-compensating concrete (SCC) mixes made with expansive cement is another option for durability.
Is concrete good for flooring?
Concrete withstands wear, and it's resistant to fire, stains, water, bacteria and odors. It won't scratch, it's easy to clean, and the design is customizable. Concrete also contributes to good air quality, and it can help reduce energy bills when used properly.
In most circumstances, a residential concrete floor is created by grinding an existing structural concrete slab and applying a chosen polishing, colorizing, or texturizing technique. This can involve first removing any existing flooring, such as carpeting or vinyl, to expose the existing concrete slab.
How thick is cement flooring?
The base comprises plain cement concrete (PCC base), which is 3 to 4 inches thick. Depending on the type of use, the thickness of concrete is chosen for flooring and laid over the concrete base (1:4:8). It ranges between 25 mm to 75 mm. A 38 mm thick underlayer of concrete is used for 50 mm thick IPS flooring.
Polished concrete floors are very durable and with proper maintenance will last you a lifetime. Tiles are also durable but they're a little more fragile in comparison to concrete. If you drop something heavy on a tiled floor, it's likely to crack and chip
