Two years after Hanau: Challenges in anti-fascist remembrance work
On Tuesday, 15 March 2022, an evening event with guests from Hanau at the FC St. Pauli Museum at Millerntor as a livestream, we will remember the victims of the murders two years ago - and at the same time look to the future in conversation with guests and audience: What does "never again" mean? When does it start, and what can we actively do?
On 19 February 2020, a racist ripped nine people from their lives in Hanau: Ferhat Unvar, Mercedes Kierpacz, Sedat Gürbüz, Gökhan Gültekin, Hamza Kurtović, Kaloyan Velkov, Vili-Viorel Păun, Said Nesar Hashemi and Fatih Saraçoğlu.
The racist murders have a continuity - but the debate and the public have changed. The families, friends and survivors, together with supporters, are shaping the remembrance and commemoration, demanding clarification, consequences and justice. They are at the centre of the discourse as never before, building on the previous struggles of survivors of racist violence.
On this evening, we want to discuss with Cetin Gültekin (brother of the murdered Gökhan Gültekin), Newroz Duman (Initiative 19 February) and Ali Yildirim (childhood friend of Ferhat Unvar and project coordinator of the educational initiative Ferhat Unvar) where they currently stand in their struggle, what demands they have for the future and what role football can play.
