On a hot August day in 1590, an English explorer named John White approached an island off the coast of virginia in a wooden vessel called the Hopewell. White had established a colony on that island three years earlier so he was eager to check in on his people and resume his position as the colony’s governor. After White landed on the island in a small row boat he began investigating. What he found there has gone down in history as one of the most baffling mysteries in American history.
